The unexpected play date

London loves having play dates. Poor thing, we don't really have alot because school sucks up all our time but she is always asking if someone can come over and play. She also loves to make a list of the guests she wants over and writes down a play-by-play of exactly what they will do when they get here. The other day she came home from school and went straight upstairs. She worked hard at something for a long time. She finally came downstairs with a note that was sealed in an envelope and asked if I would mail it off for her. I asked her what it said and she said she wrote a little note asking if "Sarah" could come and play on Saturday. I thought it was sweet and helped her mail it off. I thought that maybe Sarah's mom would see it, think it was cute, and maybe we could set something up for the girls. We stuck it in the mailbox and I forgot all about it.
Saturday rolled around and I left in the morning to go to a MOPS meeting. Before I left, I hear London tell J how excited she is that Sarah is coming over. I sit her down and tell her that Sarah is not coming over. I told her that Sarah's mom never called me. I told her that Sarah's mom doesn't even know me but maybe we can meet sometime and then she can come over. I told her not to get her hopes up with which she replied, "My big hopes are already up!" I left leaving J to handle the situation.
It was almost noon and I was driving home. J called me and said, "You are never going to believe this, but Sarah's mom just dropped her off!" I couldn't believe it. I was surprised that Sarah's mom left her with my husband, whom she has never even met! I certainly would never do that! J said that Sarah's mom got the invitation to come over and play at noon and pick her up at 2:00....so here she is!
I get home to a house of wild girls. I made lunch for them and I noticed that Sarah has on her PJ's so I ask her about it. She said that the invitation told her to wear them. I suddenly look at London amazed at what she has done. She wrote an inviation all by herself. She said what day to come over, what time, and even what to wear--all without me helping her! I was very impressed. The girls played really well together for the rest of the afternoon. When Sarah's mom came to get her, we introduced ourselves, and laughed a little at this invitation that London sent. The whole situation was a little weird but I ended up talking to Sarah's mom for about half an hour and really liked her. Granted, I would never do what she did, but I did like her.
After they left, I apologized to London and told her I didn't think Sarah would come over but I was wrong. She said, "Oh, I just knew she would come over! I sent her an invitation!"
London then drew a picture of her play date and asked if we could do it again sometime. I said sure but will never let that child send off a note in the mail without my approval.
Lesson learned.
